Wrestling in their final event of the calendar year, the #1 King University women's wrestling team dominated at the Wasps Women's Open, with six wrestlers claiming championships while the Tornado ran away with the team race for the second consecutive season.

RESULTS: 1st out of 13 (244 points)

LOCATION: King Center; Emory, Va.


HOW IT HAPPENED

  • #2 Chey Bowman won the championship at 170 pounds, going 5-0 on the day. After starting her day with a 32-second pin, she won three consecutive tech falls, setting up a championship match against #4 Tiffani Baublitz, which Bowman won 5-0.
  • Baublitz went 3-1 on the day, with her lone loss coming to Bowman. Two of her wins came via pin, including a 28-second pin of Raya Sessoms of Apprentice. After winning her second match 10-0, she pinned Emma Diaz of Life University in 1:46.
  • At 143 pounds, #1 Ana Luciano brought home the championship after a 4-0 day. It started with back-to-back 10-0 wins before winning a 9-4 decision over Marsiol Nugent. She closed out the day with a 58-second pin of Gabriella Shevlin of Presbyterian College to secure the title.
  • Viktorya Torres placed second at 136 pounds, going 3-1. After pinning Emmanuel's Samantha Larios, she suffered her lone loss of the day, a 12-6 loss to #3 Paige Wehrmeister. She rebounded to win her final two matches, including a 1:14 pin of Lincoln Memorial's Stephanie Castro and a 10-0 win over Chloe Lawler from Mount Olive.
  • #5 Avery Kibelbek also went undefeated on the day, winning all four of her matches, including a 10-3 win over Devyn Gomez of Life University and a 6-2 decision over Presbyterian's #4 Samantha Miller before beating Hope Eastes of Emmanuel in her final match of the day, 14-4.
  • At 109 pounds, #2 Sage Mortimer won all five of her matches. She started the day with a 24-second win over teammate #3 Dianna Holmes before rattling off four consecutive tech falls, including a 10-0 win over Haley Zinninger of Emmanuel.
  • After dropping her opening match of the day, Holmes rebounded with four straight wins to take second place. Included in those matches was three tech falls, including a 13-2 win in her final match.
  • #2 Samara Chavez and #3 Danielle Garcia were co-champions at 116 pounds. Chavez won her first four matches of the day, two of which came via pin. Garcia went 3-0, with two wins via pin and a 7-2 decision over #4 Ainslie Lane of Presbyterian.
  • Wrestling at 123 pounds, #3 Vayle-Rae Baker went 5-0 to claim the championship, including three 10-0 wins and a 7-4 decision over teammate Melanie Mendoza in the championship match.
  • Mendoza went 3-1 on the day, with all three of her wins coming via fall, including a 43-second pin of Dorothy Gerrell of Emmanuel.
  • #2 Montana DeLawder also brought home a championship, going 5-0 at 130 pounds. After winning her first match of the day via pin, she won 13-2 over Presbyterian's #3 Sierra Marie Miller. She closed her day with a 58-second pin over Ava Thomas of Emory & Henry.
