Northeast State Community College offers High School Equivalency Diploma program at no cost | Northeast State Community College
With Northeast State Community College’s High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma program, it is never too late to return to the classroom.
Formerly known as the GED, the HSE Diploma program at the College connects those 16 years and older with the resources needed to earn their diploma at no cost.
“I’ve had one 70-year-old go through the program and obtain his HSE diploma,” Program Director Robert McKinney said.
Those interested in the program can call 844-637-5697 or email AdultEd@NortheastState.edu with inquiries surrounding the program requirements. The program has an eight-county service area and offers morning, afternoon and evening classes in Bristol, Elizabethton, Erwin, Greeneville, Johnson City, Kingsport, Mountain City, Rogersville and Sneedville.
Participants must complete at least 12 hours to be eligible to take the tests to receive a diploma. Test subjects include mathematics, reading, writing, science and social studies.
“Obtaining the HSE diploma opens the door for the students to go to college,” McKinney said. “They have access to the Hope Scholarship, TN Promise and TN Reconnect, and then that opens up opportunities for employment.”
McKinney said that it usually costs about $80 for an adult to pursue and receive an HSE diploma if they are not registered in the Adult Education program. The program at Northeast State includes study materials and is free to eligible students through the use of state-funded vouchers. The voucher includes two retakes per subject.
“Say someone passes reading and math the first time they took the tests but didn’t pass the other three subjects,” McKinney said. “They would only need to retake the tests for the subjects not originally passed.”
According to McKinney, an average of 212 students have obtained their HSE diplomas over the last four years. Northeast State partners with American Job Centers to connect adults to the HSE Diploma program, which is grant-funded and overseen by the State of Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
