Rep. Mark Green, a U.S. Congressman representing Tennessee's 7th district since 2019, has been vocal about the national security threats posed by unmanned aerial systems (UAS), particularly those produced in China. His recent tweets highlight concerns over drone activities and legislative efforts to address these issues.
On December 10, 2024, Rep. Green reminded the public of his actions in June urging for the declassification of information related to national security threats from Chinese-manufactured drones. He stated: "#ICYMI: In June, I urged the declassification of certain information pertaining to the national security threats posed by unmanned aerial systems (UAS), or drones, that have been produced, manufactured, or assembled in China."
The following day, on December 11, 2024, he expressed concerns regarding unidentified drones flying over New Jersey and New York. Highlighting potential risks from both recreational users and adversaries targeting critical infrastructure, he noted: "The drones flying over New Jersey and New York could be from anyone; a recreational user or an adversary spying on our critical infrastructure, we don’t know." He also mentioned his bipartisan legislation titled "Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorization Act."
Later that day on December 11th, Rep. Green shared another tweet emphasizing the threat posed by commercially available drones being used maliciously at mass gatherings. He remarked: "A key concern of mine that should concern us all is the ease with which a terrorist or other malicious actor can buy a cheap, commercially available drone and use it to carry and drop explosive payloads over a football stadium or another mass gathering site."
